House Burn

Burley Tobacco with Barn Rot

House burn or barn rot is typically caused by common bacteria that are present all the time, but only cause problems under very wet curing conditions. House burn can begin in the field as hollow stalk or bacterial leaf drop. Housing wet tobacco can cause house burn as well. For more information on managing house burn see Tobacco Fact Sheet TOB-1-05.
